April is a great time for fish and seafood as the sea is at its coldest and fish at its freshest. Look out for Lemon Sole and oysters as well as cod, haddock, halibut, hake and mussels. Spring lamb is just around the corner and we can't wait!
Garden vegetables, on the other hand, can be scarce – you should see how bare the Blackfriars allotment is! There's still a few leeks in the ground now together with some parsnips, Jerusalem artichokes, celeriac, sprouts, onions and a few other things but, generally speaking, last year's veg is running out whilst this year's is still to come through and we’ll have to wait a while for British asparagus, strawberries and sorrel to come through.
Rhubarb, on the other hand, is coming through and some early radishes but you might have to wait a while for purple sprouting broccoli and spring onions. There are also St Georges mushrooms and always loads of wild garlic which we’re using now for our pesto.
Further afield, there's plenty of tropical fruit including lemons, kiwis and delicious blood oranges.
